Down By the Riverside
I happen to know that area residents appreciate the resource that is New Albany's riverfront amphitheatre. What's more, I know several who have some tremendously creative ideas for exploiting that investment in a way that will create more entertainment opportunities for the city, its residents, and its businesses.
Some of these ideas are revenue generators; others are pure community building events.
Bob Trinkle, director of the venue, announced the cancellation of the fall riverfront events this week. But there is a silver lining.
Trinkle has invited residents to join a planning committee meeting on Sept. 11 to discuss plans for the 2006 season. He invites "anyone from the public sector or business community who has ideas for entertainment opportunities" to attend the 90-minute session.

Someone thank him for having the meeting when I'm not in the country to attend it.
Why have fall events been cancelled?
Fiscal prudence. With the city operating on $2.8 million less than the previous year, and losing $1 million on sanitation operations, there simply isn't the money.
I'm pretty sure Bob scheduled the meeting only after he found out what days you'd be in Europe.
Since we didn't get Saturday's paper until today, I didn't see the 'Bune notice of which you speak.
Isn't this the best imaginable case for some degree of privatization? Someone should be given the conceptual leeway to run the Trinkle Dome and both pay the city and turn a profit.
Bob Trinkle himself seems willing to book only certain types of entertainment - is this his choice, or a directive from the city?
