Did You Know?

Effective Jan. 1, the city workers who manage New Albany's stormwater drainage system have been severed from the accounts of the sewer utility. City Council established a stormwater quality management account from which these workers are paid. Whether a user fee to fund the account has been collected or not has no bearing on whether these workers get paid. It is the account to which their payroll is charged that matters. That account has been established and budgeted.

So for those who continue to insist that these workers are STILL a drain on sewer finances - stop the lying!

Nicely put. I do sometimes wonder if it is a "lie" or a case of a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. Accrual accounting can be a complicated concept for the novice.

I used to wonder the same thing, iamhoosier, until I witnessed the same people telling the same tales over and over again, even after being confronted with factual evidence to the contrary and then just simply refusing to acknowledge their role in the spreading of misinformation.

After a year of trying to be more active in civic affairs, I admit to still being taken aback by the willingness of some people to just flat out lie as if the factual truth had no value in helping the city advance.

It occurred to me that my contributions to the public dialogue as of late have been very negative. Quite frankly, dishonesty frustrates the crap out of me. It's important to note, though, particularly as we're sure to be reminded of the importance of such things this MLK weekend, that good news is happening on the ground daily.

Businesses are moving into downtown, neighborhood plans are progressing, historic preservation efforts are moving forward, Scribner Place and the Greenway are beginning to materialize, the overall New Albany buzz is increasing and, perhaps most importantly, I've met a lot of caring, intelligent people in the last year who are determined to be more involved. In short, people are working to improve our city and doing so successfully. Here's to reminding everybody, including me.

Some people never learn. "Screech Off or Leave New Albany" continues to publish its libel. Misappropriation is a crime, yet the publisher over there continues to bandy the word about as if it were benign.

NYT v. Sullivan rules and protections don't apply here. SOLNA and its publisher have committed actionable defamation, going far beyond the boundaries of political speech.

And caught in a lie about perhaps the simplest of fund accounting processes, the publisher doesn't recant, doesn't seek to educate herself, but bemoans the blot on her character. Amazing.

But the most telling sign of her gullibility/culpability (I can't say which), is her attempt to identify anonymous comments that denigrate her posters as coming from a progressive world view.

I'll say it again. The only purpose for the sophomoric assaults that take place over there is to keep the fires of speculation and slander stoked. Now tell me, who among the progressives benefits from that?

No one. It is clear that those broadsides are manufactured by fellow travelers who wish to conjure an enemy to fight. Since they never engage in debate, that's as close to it as they can come. The deficits in imagination on that blog are exceeded only by the shortfall of rationality and the dearth of veracity.
