Who's For Real?
The fight comes Monday.
Out of pettiness and revenge for being whipped, it looks as if the council is about to turn on its new leader, Jack Messer, and try to give him a black eye.
Or maybe it's a backlash at discovering the mayor actually is thinking about the future.
In any case, the council approves the appointment of the OEO. If they fail to approve the eminently qualified Mr. Messer, then our suspicions about them will have been proved correct: They were never serious about codes enforcement in the first place.
With Beverly Crump on vacation, more than one city councilMAN is going to have to set aside his wounded pride and prove his code enforcement bona fides.
Remember, Ms. Bolovschak has them all on tape claiming to be born-again enforcers. When she finally turns over those tapes to the NAFC Public Library for public viewing, they won't be able to deny their hypocrisy if they fail to approve Messer.

Indeed, we seem to be occupying the roller coaster for an endless ride.
As stated in the NAC comments section, unfortunately I'm not going to be able to come up for air until Sunday at the earliest, with an all-day beer gig in Indy on Saturday, and on Monday night, a beer dinner that was rescheduled once already just to ensure my presence.
Repeating: Who can cover the council meeting and provide a report? Randy? Bluegill? Concern Taxpayer (chuckle)?
Responsible State Street Property Owners will be there. East Spring Street Neighborhood Association will be there. S. Ellen Jones Neighborhood Association will be there. Silver Grove Neighborhood Association will be there. The birthing Gateway neighborhood folks will be there. CFP will be there. New Albany Historic Business District Association will be there. Develop New Albany will be there.
People who care about the future of this city will be there to show support for Jack Messer and this five-month demonstration project to show how it's supposed to work.
Dear Responsible State Street Property Owner
The City of New Albany is in the process of hiring a code enforcement officer to enforce codes already in place with regards to property upkeep and maintenance.
There are a number of run down, vacant, neglected properties on State Street which are eyesores and helping run down property values.
These properties can be identified with the following State Street addresses; 502, 828, 830, 834, 914, 930, 1113, 1115, 1306, 1410, 1417, 1418, 1496, 1500, 1502, 1504, 1616, 1622, 1717-(vacant garage), 1723.
We need to band together to ensure the city gets these State Street property owners to either upgrade, clean up, demolish, or sell to someone at a reasonable price who will do the above.
We need everyone’s help in cleaning up State Street.
1. Go to Destinations Book Store at 604 Spring Street and get a CLEAN UP NEW ALBANY sign and place it in front of your property.
2. Contact the Mayor’s Office (948-5333) and request an update on the hiring of the code enforcement officer.
3. Once the code enforcement officer is hired, report these properties and “follow up” to make sure something will be done immediately.
Remember, our properties are located just a short drive between New Albany’s crowning jewels, Floyd Memorial’s new heart hospital and the new Scribner Place.
We want to impress visitors to our city, not depress them.
Sincerely,
Responsible State Street Property Owners
Anonymous - I'm not sure I would have come right out and declared these addresses to be non-compliant, and perhaps you aren't doing quite that.
But I think it's OK to suggest that certain properties ought to be looked at.
That's a good way to get accountability. If folks see the sites "before" and "after," it can only build a better city.
Vacant property at 604 E Spring St, the former Jackson Hewitt Tax Service.
Well, my beer dinner date has been changed again, this time to Aug. 8, so I'll be there after all.
Those paying attention would know that Jackson Hewitt isn't a former, but a current tenant of the building referenced as "vacant" in a truly witty comment above.
Any suspensions of sanitation workers are just rumors. I'm not saying it didn't happen - I'm saying I don't know about it.
However, I thought the mayor was out of town today. And Steve is right - the mayor did say "they'll be disciplined" to the reporter after being shown the video that aired on channel 32.
I was trying to mentally picture the procedure on this when I heard the rumor about suspensions. How would you defend yourself if shown that video? Say 'That's not me'?
The mayor certainly looked as if he'd been pole-axed while they filmed him watching it on tape.
No comment on this or any other matter of importance in today's 'Bune, other than an excellent letter to the editor that'll never see the light of the Internet.
Appreciated, Ed.
